Protest

This past weekend marked the third anniversary of the Iraq war. Anti-war protests were scheduled in many communities all across the country, and even all around the world. Not to be outshone, the Reno lefties held their own protest. It included many of the usual suspects, such as A.N.S.W.E.R. and Code Pink, both with strong Marxist/Stalinist ties. They marched through the downtown casino area and finished up at the Federal building. They had their usual assortment of signs such as "Bush is the terrorist" and "Impeach Bush" etc.

In opposition we joined forces with the local Patriot Warrior group and some students from the UNR College Republicans. They had prepared a large number of signs and we brought our flags. We were stationed at the Federal building to greet them as they arrived.

We should note that the operation did not seem as smooth and polished as the San Diego PW group. I considered the message on many of the signs to be caustic insults against "Liberals" and not helpful to our cause, even though all of the insults were solidly based on fact. When the anti-war group arrived the encounter quickly descended into the trading of verbal insults. One of the PWs would question, "Why are peace activists so violent?" The lefties would then call us "Chicken Hawks".

While this may have allowed each side to feel superior to the other, I don't think it was beneficial. The local paper here in Reno is extremely biased in favor of the left and they seized upon any opportunity to show conservatives in a negative light. While I don't expect to convince the lefties anything about my/our position, I think the taunting only serves to cut off dialogue. It also tends to convey an image of immaturity and bad manners, one that the Left usually owns in Spades. All in all, I was not impressed with our performance.
