Fun With Snow

Winter is here - and who wouldn't want to do this?

Life Goes On

It's now two weeks since the election. Yes, I was disappointed about the outcome, extremely so. I had worked very hard seeking different results but, alas, to little, or no avail. But, as we all get to experience, life goes on. One of the great values for me in working on this campaign was the people I was able to meet. I truly valued getting to know, ever so briefly, the Palins and Sarah's family, the Heaths. I am grateful for the experience.

Nevada Day parade and the Palins

Image
We participated yesterday in the Nevada Day parade in Carson City. Nevada Day is the celebration of the admittance to the union on October 31, 1864. Nevada happens to be the only state that has this type of celebration. The large crowd ignored the cold and occasional light rain and was very enthusiastic. Northern Nevada's numerous Republican women's clubs assembled, rode on, and walked behind a float supporting our Republican candidates for elected office. The float had a lady elephant holding a hockey stick. Jim and Fay Palin, the parents of Todd Palin, were guests of honor on our float. As it turned out, Mrs Palin decided that she would rather walk the route and "work the crowd". Her husband quickly joined in. In my opinion, they were very favorably received. We also had the opportunity to meet Sarah Palin's parents, the Heaths. We all were immediately very close friends and thought each was the nicest person. We feel very fortunate. This seems to happ

An American Creed

I Do Not Choose to Be a Common Man It is my right to be uncommon—if I can. I seek opportunity—not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficence nor my dignity for a handout. I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid; to think and act for myself, enjoy the benefit of my creations and to face the world boldly and say, “This I have done.” By Dean Alfange ______________ *Originally published in This Week Magazine. Later printed in The Reader’s Digest, October 1952 and January 1954. The Honorable Dean Alfange was an American statesman born December 2, 1899, in Constantinople (now Istanbul).

Where did the summer go?

Snow fell yesterday - enough to cover the grass. The first snow in the mountains happened a week ago.

545 People

Image
I'm including this opinion piece by Charlie Reese 545 PEOPLE By Charlie Reese Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them. Have you ever wondered why, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, we have deficits? Have you ever wondered why, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, we have inflation and high taxes? You and I don't propose a federal budget. The president does. You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does. You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does. You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does. You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does. One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that pl

Albert, RIP

Image
Albert, AKA "Fat Albert", AKA "Mister Albert" went to Kitty Heaven yesterday. He had lived with us for about 9 years and had been in declining health for perhaps the last year. He had been diagnosed with kidney failure. He was dehydrated and we were giving him fluids every couple of days. His body was a mere whisper of his former self and had become very weak and frail. We shall miss him.
