Devils tower and the Black Hills

We stopped at Devils Tower National Monument and walked around the base. We then drove on to Rapid City, SD.


Fri: The road lead to Custer, SD, and to Custer State Park. I wanted to climb Harney Peak, the highest point in SD. The round trip took about 4 hours and covered about 6 miles. It passed through some very beautiful country. A former forest service lookout tower was built on the peak as a CCC project. We returned to the bottom just as it began to rain and hail.

I secured a camp site in the park. We were all three exhausted (Yes, Riley was allowed on the trails at the state park.) but Riley soon found his second wind.

Sat: We visited the Crazy Horse Memorial mountain. It is a very impressive undertaking and I highly reccommend it for anyone.

Parmesan - Olive No-knead Bread

As you may know, I have been practicing baking no knead bread.  I think I have the system pretty well figured out, at least for here in Reno.  With the elevation of about 4500 feet the recipes seem to need some tweaking. The white bread most closely resembles to  me a fine artisan bread.  The most important criteria seems to be how wet the dough is (the amount of water).  Number two seems to be the nature of the container for the final proof (rising). this time I tried a loaf of regular white bread with parmesan cheese and black olives.  Although I deviated from the recipe the bread was outstanding.

I am posting excerpts from an email from a friend that recently moved from San Diego to the DC area. It shows her observations on life in a different world. I notice people here, on base, talk a lot about their gardens, which plants are in bloom, and how we need rain . They are not pedestrian friendly, definitely not pedestrian friendly. one woman stopped to allow me to walk from the store to the parking lot and the car behind her started to go around her and just about hit me. I had some profane words for car no. II Californians are in for a shock when dealing with east coast traffic. Slow as heck drivers. the I-95 is the main artery going N and S. Everyone is going N in a.m. into DC. It starts to back up a good 25 miles south of DC. I see the gridlock/parking lot from my on ramp. I-95 is only a 3 lane interstate and it is ugly with all the big rigs. there are yield signs getting onto the freeways, scary!! there is the HOV lanes with 2 lanes for 3 or more they open and c...

Signs of Our Times

It has been brought to my attention that the photos in the post, "Are We Safe" could not be seen. They were there inside the post, but some form of magic may have decided that the post should only contain text. Anyhow, here they are again. I have also included a photo from Marion County, OR, that great bastion of conservative principles. LGF reported that the sign has subsequently been vandallized.
